Nació el 07/11/1918 en Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba). Rafael era minero, nació cuando la cuenca minera de su localidad de origen se constituyó como uno de los más importantes polos industriales de Andalucía y el mayor de la provincia de Córdoba.
Estuvo en el campo de prisioneros de guerra alemán XI-B Fallingbostel (Alemania), siendo deportado el 25/01/1941. Llega al campo el día 27 y le adjudicaron la matrícula 6624. Apenas un año después, el 10/01/1942, fue asesinado.
Poco tiempo después de acabar la guerra en España, la guardia civil llamó a la puerta de la casa de Rafael «¿María Juan Montero? Síganos al cuartel». María, con miedo y sorpresa siguió sus pasos. En el cuartel le hicieron leer una carta cuyo remitente era un catalán. Nunca recordó su nombre, ¡tenía tanto miedo! En esa carta, el catalán contaba que su hermano había muerto en un campo de concentración nazi, llamado Mauthausen. Que antes de morir le dijo a su compañero que hablara con su familia, que hablara con María, y le relatara lo que le había pasado y que siempre la tuvo cerca, en su corazón. Que sus ojos azules le mantuvieron con vida durante mucho tiempo y que hundirse en ellos era lo único que le reconfortaba en esos días grises tan duros.
He was born on 07/11/1918 in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba). Rafael was a miner, born when the mining area of his home town became one of the most important industrial centre in Andalusia and the largest in the province of Cordoba.
He was in the German prisoner of war camp XI-B Fallingbostel (Germany), and was deported on 25/01/1941. He arrived at the camp on the 27th and was given the registration number 6624. Just over a year later, on 10/01/1942, he was killed.
Shortly after the end of the war in Spain, the Civil Guard knocked on the door of Rafael's house, “María Juan Montero? Follow us to the barracks”. Maria, with fear and surprise, followed in his footsteps. At the barracks, they made her read a letter from a Catalan. She never remembered his name, she was so afraid! In the letter, the Catalan told her that her brother had died in a Nazi concentration camp called Mauthausen. Before he died, he told his companion to talk to his family, to talk to Maria, and to tell her what had happened to him and that he always kept her close to him, in his heart. That her blue eyes kept him alive for a long time and that sinking into them was the only thing that comforted him in those hard grey days.
Geboren am 7. November 1918 in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba). Rafael war Bergmann und wurde in einer Zeit geboren, als das Bergbaugebiet in seiner Heimat eines der wichtigsten Industriezentren in Andalusien und das größte in der Provinz Córdoba war.
Er wurde im deutschen Kriegsgefangenenlager XI-B in Fallingbostel (Deutschland) gefangen gehalten und am 25. Jänner 1941 deportiert. Am 27. kam er im Konzentrationslager an, wo ihm die Häftlingsnummer 6624 zugewiesen wurde. Knapp ein Jahr danach wurde er am 10. Jänner 1942 ermordet.
Kurz nach dem Kriegsende in Spanien klopfte die Guardia Civil bei Rafaels Haus an: „María Juan Montero? Kommen Sie mit uns in die Kaserne.“ María folgte den Beamten angsterfüllt und überrascht. In der Kaserne wurde ihr ein Brief vorgelegt, der von einem Katalanen geschrieben war. Sie erinnerte sich nicht an dessen Namen, so groß war ihre Angst! Darin berichtete der Katalane, dass ihr Bruder in einem NS-Konzentrationslager namens Mauthausen gestorben war. Kurz vor seinem Tod habe er seinen Kameraden gebeten, mit seiner Familie, mit María, zu sprechen und ihr das Geschehene zu erzählen, und dass er sie immer im Herzen trage. Ihre blauen Augen hielten ihn sehr lange am Leben, sich in sie zu vertiefen, sei das Einzige gewesen, was ihm in diesen so harten grauen Tagen Trost gespendet hätte.
