Biografía
Nació el 27/12/1915 en Espejo (Córdoba, España). Sus padres eran Rafael Peña Lucena y Elisa Córdoba García y tuvo tres hermanos: Virgilio, que también estuvo deportado en Buchenwald y Elisa y Licinio, que sufrieron represión por comunistas. Era campesino y desde muy pequeño ya cuidaba cabras.
Luchó en la guerra civil española, alcanzando el grado de sargento de Infantería en el ejército republicano. Escapó a Francia, donde se alistó en el 22 Regimiento de Marcha de Voluntarios Extranjeros.
Fue apresado en el Stalag XVII-A, de Kaisersteinbruch (Austria), con número de matrícula 54686. El 05/04/1941 fue trasladado a la cárcel de la Gestapo en Viena, de donde salió dos días después hacia Mauthausen. El convoy levaba a 200 republicanos españoles, 7 de los cuales eran cordobeses. De ellos no sobrevivieron 107, entre los que se encuentra Hirilio y tres de sus paisanos..
Llegó a Mauthausen el 07/04/1941, donde se le asignó el número 4844. Fue trasladado a Gusen el 20/10/1941, con matrícula 14417. Allí murió el 20/04/1942, con solo 26 años.
He was born on 27/12/1915 in Espejo (Córdoba, Spain). His parents were Rafael Peña Lucena and Elisa Córdoba García and he had three siblings: Virgilio, who was also deported to Buchenwald, and Elisa and Licinio, who were repressed for being communists. He was a peasant and at a very young age he was already tending goats.
He fought in the Spanish Civil War, reaching the rank of infantry sergeant in the Republican army. He escaped to France, where he enlisted in the 22nd Foreign Volunteer Marching Regiment.
He was captured in Stalag XVII-A, Kaisersteinbruck (Austria), registration number 54686. On 05/04/1941 he was transferred to the Gestapo prison in Vienna, from where he left two days later for Mauthausen. The convoy was carrying 200 Spanish Republicans, 7 of whom were from Cordoba. Of these, 107 did not survive, among them Hirilio and three of his fellow countrymen.
