Biography

Stanisław Długi was born on 5 October 1900 in Wielkopolski. He was a member of the Polska Organizacja Wojskowa (POW – Polish Military Organisation) in Wielkopolski and took part in the Greater Poland Uprising of 1918/1919; afterwards he settled in Rybnik. From 1939 to the time of his arrest he worked on a farm in Rybnik. At the beginning of the Nazi occupation he joined the underground organisation Związek Walki Zbrodniej/Armia Krajowa (Union of Armed Struggle/Home Army). On 25 June 1943 he was arrested and taken to the remand prison in Mysłowice. After an examination of his case, on 18 January 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp and registered there under prisoner number 172457. In January 1945 he was sent on the death march from Auschwitz concentration camp to Wodzisław Śląski from where, as part of a mass transport, he was taken by freight train to Mauthausen concentration camp, where he was registered under prisoner number 117659. Shortly afterwards he was sent to the Melk subcamp and finally to Ebensee. He died a few days before the liberation of the concentration camp.
