Biography

Jan Stefan Douglas-Oderfeld was a Polish lawyer living in Paris who joined the French Resistance. Because he spoke perfect German as well as French he was involved in anti-Nazi activity directed at members of the Wehrmacht. Arrested by the Gestapo on 12 August 1942 he was in prison at the Fort de Romainville before being listed for deportation to Mauthausen together with 30 other members of Resistance (see attached documents dated 25 February 1943). He survived in Mauthausen from April 1943 to September 1944 with the help of members of the Polish resistance organisation in the camp, including Franciszek Poprawka, Kazimierz Rusinek and Franciszek Sokol.
