The following instructions must be followed when writing to prisoners:
1) Every month every prisoner from protective custody may receive and send one letter or card from their relatives. The letters to the prisoners must be legibly written in ink and contain only 15 lines on one page. Only a normal size letterhead is allowed. Envelopes must be unlined. A maximum of 5 stamps of 12 Pfg. may be enclosed in a letter. Everything else is prohibited and is subject to confiscation. Postcards are limited to 10 lines. Photographs may not be used as postcards.
2) Cash remittances are permitted, but the surname and first name, date of birth, inmate block and room must be specified.
3) Newspapers are allowed, but may only be ordered through the post office of K.L. Mauthausen.
4) Shipping parcels are not allowed because the prisoners can buy everything in the camp.
5) Applications for release from protective captivity to the camp commandment are futile.
6) Speaking and visiting prisoners in the concentration camp is generally not permitted.
All mail that does not meet these requirements will be destroyed.

Dear Wife and Children!
I received a letter dated 16.12.40, for which I warmly thank you. I am healthy and I hope you are too. Dear Wife! Until now I haven't received any parcel from you.
Please write me if all the children are healthy and take of them particularly of little Adam.
Please also write to me if my parents are healthy and send them my warmest greetings. Don’t leave the little Adam alone in the apartment so that he doesn't cause any trouble. The best would be to take Franz out of school so that you can leave someone with him. I am very worried about little Adam.
Many greetings from Franz.
