Biography

Nils Johan Harjo was born on 5 April 1887 in Sør-Varanger. He was the son of Johan Petter Harjo and Marie Efrosina, née Beddari. In 1910 he married Marie Elmine Sieppi, who came from Finland. In his professional life he had a leading position as a log driver.

On 20 August 1942 he was arrested due of the illegal activities of one of his sons. My father, Osvald Harjo, was his eldest son. He was arrested by the Germans and was due to be transferred to Germany for imprisonment. But he managed to escape the Germans. He fled to Russia, where he was recaptured and only returned home 13 years later. My father, Osvald Harjo, died in 1993 after many good years in Norway.

My grandfather, Nils Johan Harjo, was arrested after father’s escape. Granddad was sent to Tromsø and later to Trondheim, and on 11 March 1943 he arrived at the Grini prison camp near Oslo. On 9 March 1944 he was deported to the Natzweiler concentration camp in France as a Nacht-und-Nebel (‘Night and Fog’) prisoner. When Natzweiler was evacuated in September 1944, he was transferred to Dachau, then to Mauthausen and its subcamp Melk. He died there on 23 November 1944.
