Marshal Major in the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Guard)[1]

Enlistment: 21 February 1917, as a guard. Training course at the school for non-commissioned officers in Caserta after the First World War; graduation on 10 September 1919 as a junior brigadier.

Military service: mobilised on 1 October 1917 with the XIth Battalion, which operated in the Balkans; Genoa Legion; Milan Legion. Promoted to Maresciallo maggiore (marshal major) on 7 January 1936.

Family: son of Pasquale and Stella Tuccillo; Married Rosa Caminada on 25 January 1941.

Life story: After 8 September 1943, following the German occupation of northern and central Italy and with it that of the Varese province, Maresciallo Cortile joined the humanitarian organisation linked to Don Gilberto Pozzi, a priest in Clivio (Varese), and worked to help in particular Jewish refugees and those suffering persecution.

The German police, who were guarding the Swiss border in place of the Italian authorities, arrested Maresciallo Cortile on 11 August 1944 in Clivio for correspondence with Switzerland. At first he was held at the jail in Varese, then transferred to the San Vittore prison in Milan and from there to the camp at Bolzano. From there he was deported to Mauthausen, where he was finally transferred to the Melk subcamp. He died there on 9 January 1945.

By decree of the President of the Republic of Italy dated 16 June 2006, Luigi Cortile was awarded the Golden Civilian Service Medal in memorium on the following grounds:

‘During the last World War, showing extreme courage and laudable commitment, he joined the cause of Jewish refugees and those suffering political persecution by helping them to emigrate illegally to nearby Switzerland. The Nazi Fascists captured him and transported him to a concentration camp on Austrian territory, where he lost his life. His is a praiseworthy example of the highest moral dignity, of a generous willingness to make sacrifices and of human solidarity.’

[1] The Financial Guard, founded in 1774, is a special unit of the Italian police with comprehensive powers and responsible for all commercial and financial affairs. It answers directly to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, has a military structure and is an integral part of the national armed forces and law enforcement agencies. During the Second World War it was deployed on military missions but was used primarily to protect the civilian population. After the armistice (8 September 1943) it joined the Americans and British in supporting the resistance to Nazi Fascism.
