Biography

Chiel Bruhand was born in Wieliczka, Poland, just outside of Krakow on 4 June 1897 to Brucha. He had at least one brother, Benjamin. He lived in Krakow and was a successful engineer. He built several buildings including one at 14 Warszawska street. He had a storefront in the mid 1920s on 65 starowislna street. A couple of blocks down there was a Wig store run by three sisters. He ended up marrying one of the sisters, Bat-Sheva Schall. Family was important to him and during the Holocaust he was able to use his family and industry connections to help his wife's family. He and his brother managed to get favourable positions for his nephew Sam Weisberg (nee Abraham Icek Gajer) and his brother-in-law Eli Meyer Gajer, while they were imprisoned together in Plaszow. These caring acts were pivotal in allowing his nephew to survive the war.
