Ηλίας Γεωργιόπουλος / Ilias Georgiopoulos 1906 - 1945 Edit

Born 22.10.1906 in Gargalianos
Died 9.3.1945 in St. Valentin

Biography

My grandfather was born in a small village of the Peloponnese called Voutena, just north of Gargaliani. His correct name is Ilias Georgiopoulos (Ηλίας Γεωργιόπουλος). He was the owner of a small grocery store along with his brother. While on a trip to Kalamata to procure olives and olive oil, he was captured by German occupying forces (exact date unknown, probably 1942) and was transferred by train initially to Mauthausen. He was a prisoner in Mauthausen until 18 August 1944 (prisoner number 89467) and was then transferred to St. Valentin. He died just a few weeks before the liberation of the camps. He was survived by his young wife Georgia and three young sons, Leonidas, Christos and Sotiris. Life for them was incredibly hard, but they stayed united and prospered, and were able to create their own families. My grandmother mourned her husband her entire life, wore only black for more than 40 years and died peacefully in Athens, Greece in 1988. My father, Sotiris, and his brothers were forever scarred by the loss of their father, whom they hardly had a chance to know. I have no documents to verify these details presently, but his records my be found here: https://www.ushmm.org/online/hsv/person_view.php?PersonId=4352491

Thank you for preserving his memory, and I hope to be able to visit the Room of Names someday.

Sincerely, Ioannis Georgiopoulos
