Jozeph Nijkerk 1916 - 1941 Edit

Born 26.2.1916 in Amsterdam
Died 27.5.1941 in Mauthausen

Biography

Jopie Nijkerk was born in Rechtboomsloot, the northwest corner of Amsterdam’s Jewish quarter. He was the youngest child and only son of Salomon Nijkerk and Rosa Wagenhuis. Salomon, who had originally worked as a diamond cutter in Antwerp, earned his living in Amsterdam as a cigar maker. He died in 1919 and his wife only survived him by two years. For the children the loss of their parents meant growing up in orphanages. The five-year-old Jopie was sent to the Jewish Boys’ Orphanage on the Amstel, and his sisters Elisabeth and Sara to the Jewish Girls’ Orphanage in Rapenburgerstraat.

Jopie remained at the orphanage until he was 18. He was brought up and taught there and was one of the orphan boys who, from time to time, were used to say Kaddish for people who had died leaving no relatives of their own.

After leaving the orphanage he lived with an aunt in Nieuwe Kerkstraat, whom the amiable and quick-witted boy liked a lot. Jopie found a job with a fur dealer and spent his leisure playing football and chess and not least dedicating his time to Zionism, which exerted a great pull on him.

On 26 February 1941 Jopie was to turn 25, a birthday that was to be something special and to mark which the family had organised an whole range of celebrations. The festivities never took place. On Saturday 22 February, Jopie set off on his bicycle for the bathhouse and never came back. He was apprehended on the way and deported to Mauthausen via Schoorl and Buchenwald. Jopie Nijkerk died a few days after his arrival in Mauthausen. His sisters and his aunt were able to go into hiding and survived the war.
