Biography

Marc Turksma was the eldest of seven children – five boys and two girls – of the butcher Eliazer Turksma and his wife Betje Vomberg. He grew up in Polsbroek in Deventer, where his father’s shop and slaughterhouse were also located. The Turksmas were not orthodox but were a traditionally Jewish family. As the eldest son, after secondary school Marc began to work in his father’s shop, where he stayed until his marriage. It was a marriage to which his family agreed only with reluctance. That Marc’s future wife was not Jewish and did not come from their own circle was difficult for them to accept. Nevertheless, in December 1926 Marc married Maria (Mietje) Brugman. They moved to Zutphen, where they lived on Melatensteeg, and Marc set up his own butcher’s shop. In September 1927 their son Eliazer (Ies) was born, and in May 1933 their daughter Betje. Marc spent most of his free time on sporting activities. He rowed and went canoeing, he was chairman of the Zutphen cycling club, and he could regularly be found on the football pitch as a referee for the lower leagues and as a permanent linesman for the football club Go Ahead.

After over twelve years of marriage, Marc and Mietje separated. In May 1939, when Mietje was expecting their third child – Rietje, born in November – they divided up the household and went their separate ways. This step brought separation for the children as well. Betje stayed with her mother, while Marc and Ies moved in as boarders with a fellow butcher in Sidney Street. Father and son got on well but they only had a little time left to them. Marc was apprehended during a round-up in October 1941. A few weeks later he died in Mauthausen. He was 42 years old.

Marc’s mother had died already before the war. His father and his youngest brother Leon were murdered in 1943 in Sobibor. His brothers Joop, Arie and Jonas, as well as his sisters Lies and Roos, survived the war. Marc’s children survived thanks to the fact that they had been born into a ‘mixed marriage’.
