Biography

Ludwik Stępniak was born in 1902 in Wola Owsiana in the Kutno county in Warsaw governorate in the Russian partition of Polish lands. After the First World War, when Poland achieved independence, he was a teacher in the elementary school in Grabów. After the German attack on Poland, the Kutno poviat was incorporated into the Third Reich and Ludwik Stępniak was arrested during „the Intelligenzaktion” like approximately 100 000 polish people, representatives of the Polish intelligentsia. Arrested by the Gestapo in Kutno, he was delivered to the Dachau concentration camp on 6 May 1940 as a political prisoner with the number 9026. Then, on 2 August 1940, he was transferred to Gusen, a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp, with the number 7182. He died in Gusen on 31 July 1941.
