Alojz Ivanc 1912 - 1941 Edit

Born 21.4.1912 in Gorica
Died 23.10.1941 in Gusen

Biography

It may seem unbelievable but from the documents and testimonies it is clear that the first Slovenes in the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps were Spanish Republican fighters of Slovenian nationality.

Alojz Ivanc was deported to Mauthausen along with eight other prisoners on 25 January 1941.

After the collapse of the Republican Army, Ivanc had fled to France with his companions, all members of the International Brigade. At first he was interned in France as a refugee but then soon volunteered to join the French army.

When France surrendered, he was taken prisoner on 4 June 1940 with other comrades at Dunkirk and taken to a POW camp in Germany, from where he was deported to Mauthausen concentration camp. It may well be that all the Slovenes who were taken prisoner in this way wore a blue triangle with the Spanish label ‘S’ on it in the camp. All but one died in the Gusen concentration camp in 1941 and 1942. Alojz Ivanc died in Gusen on 23 October 1941.
