Biography

Josef Veselý was born on 7 July 1899 in Brno as the second of eight children. He lived all his life in Brno - Nový Lískovec. In 1917 he was drafted into the Austrian army and transferred to the Italian front. After the war he was active in the workers' physical education movement - DTJ. In 1926 he married Štěpánka Vaverková, an innkeeper in Nový Lískovec. In December of the same year, their son was born. In 1936, his wife Štěpánka died of TB and Josef became an innkeeper. He married for the second time in 1937, at that time he co-founded DTJ with a gym in their inn. On 16 March 1939, a large group of people, mostly from Vienna, accommodated in a local sanatorium, visited their inn. They came to welcome Hitler during his visit to Brno on 17 March 1939. Since Josef spoke good German (he graduated from a German school), he spoke to them and explained the political and economic situation in our country and refuted the untruths of German propaganda about violence against the German population. Then representatives of the local German residents came for those people and asked them to move to another inn, where a welcome was prepared for them. This event had an end the same evening, when Josef was visited by a delegation of local Germans led by the head teacher of the German school in Nový Lískovec. Josef was criticized for his behavior and for informing German guests. Because Josef was known as an active left-wing worker, they alerted him he should be aware of the changing situation and not act in this way. On this occasion, they also told him that his mother (my great-great-grandmother) was German, she came from Tyrol, he attended a German school, and his older brother sent his two sons to a German school. Josef stated that his wife is Czech, his son is Czech, and that he feels to be Czech too. In the end, Josef was invited not to leave the inn on 17 March 1939. This was followed by more and more events, such as arrests for listening to foreign radio, when it was proven that foreign stations could not be tuned to the radio, etc… The last arrest took place on 4-5 November 1941. Josef's second wife came from Brno-Bohunice, which was partly an agricultural village. During the occupation, she obtained eggs, a piece of meat, etc. from her acquaintances for the family. When she asked a farmer, Mr. Švestka, who had a fattening of pigs, he didn't want to sell anything except at least half a pig. After consulting with his wife, Josef went to see the butcher, Mr. Kříž. They agreed that Mr. Kříž would buy half of pig from Mr. Švestka, and Josef would take the part for himself and his family. Mr. Švestka brought meat, Josef kept a small part and Mr. Kříž loaded the meat for smoking. This happened in early October 1941. At the end of October 1941, a food inspection was carried out and in the warehouse, in the back wing of the house of the butcher of Mr. Kříž, loaded meat was found. Mr Kříž could not explain the origin of the meat and was therefore arrested. On 4 November 1941, the Gestapo came also for Josef, but he was not at home. In his house a search was carried out where they found only five cubes of artificial fat. On 5 November 1941, Joseph had to report to the Gestapo, that day it was the last time family was together. He was placed in the Gestapo police prison in Brno in Pod kaštany Street. On 27 November 1941, Josef was sentenced to hand over the Gestapo and confiscate all his property, by a court martial in Brno, according to a judgment for disturbing public order and security and for a crime under Section 1 of the War Economy Ordinance of 4 September 1939. At the beginning of January 1942, together with Mr. Švestka and Mr. Kříž, he was transferred to the Concetration camp in Mauthausen where they all perished. Josef Veselý died on 16 June 1942, at 3:15 pm - According to an entry in the Book of the Dead, the cause of death was a ruptured gastric ulcer and inflammation of the peritoneum. Mr. Švestka František died on 14 March 1942, and Mr. Kříž Arnošt on 6 May 1942 in Mauthausen. Josef Veselý was a participant in the national liberation struggle and from 5 November 1941 to 16 June 1942 a Czechoslovak political prisoner.
