Biografia
Francesco Affaba, my paternal grandfather, was born in Salerano sul lambro, provincia di Lodi. He was incarcerated in San Vittore and then in Bergamo around 20 March 1944. He was deported to Mauthausen on 5 April 1944, where he arrived on 8 April 1944. He was registered in the KL under the number 61544, as Elektrosaeger. He was transferred to KL Gusen, where died on 4 February 1945.
My grandfather had a sawmill and planted fields, but above all he produced wood for buildings and for heating, that in that year, 1943, was a precious resource due to the scarcity of fuels. He was not a partisan but an antifascist and, during the retreat of the nazi-fascisti to the north of Italy, the months between July and September 1943, he participated to public celebrations in his village. My father remembers that he threw a glass of wine on the photography of the Duce while his friend, Angelo Vanello, was transporting it on a tractor-driven cart around the country. For this reason, he seems to have been denounced to the fascist police. He was jailed in San Vittore in Milan, then in Bergamo, from where he was deported to Mauthausen together with Angelo Vanelli. They died in Gusen II on 4 and 5 February 1945.

Il nonno aveva una segheria e campi piantumati ma soprattutto produceva legna x costruzioni e x riscaldamento, cosa che nel 1943 era diventata una risorsa preziosa vista la scarsità di combustibili. Non era un partigiano ma un antifascista e, nel periodo della ritirata al nord dei tedeschi aveva partecipato alle manifestazioni di piazza X festeggiare tale ritirata e per questo pare essere stato denunciato dai fascisti del paese.

Francesco Affaba war mein Großvater väterlicherseits und wurde in Salerano sul Lambro, in der Provinz Lodi geboren. Er wurde rund um den 20. März 1944 verhaftet und kam zunächst in das Mailänder Gefängnis San Vittore und danach nach Bergamo. Er wurde am 5. April 1944 nach Mauthausen deportiert und traf dort am 8. April 1944 ein. Im Konzentrationslager erhielt er die Nummer 61544. Als Beruf wurde „Elektrosäger“ eingetragen. Er wurde in das KZ Gusen überstellt, wo er am 4. Februar 1945 verstarb.
Mein Großvater betrieb ein Sägewerk sowie auch Landwirtschaft. Der wichtigste Geschäftszweig war die Produktion von Bau- und Feuerholz, das im Jahr 1943 infolge des Treibstoffmangels eine ganz besonders wertvolle Ressource war. Er war ein Antifaschist, auch wenn er nicht bei den Partisanen war. Während des Rückzugs der Nazi-Faschisten in den Norden Italiens – zwischen Juli und September 1943 – nahm er an öffentlichen Freudenkundgebungen in seinem Dorf teil. Mein Vater erinnert sich, dass Francesco Affaba ein Glas Wein auf das Foto des Duce schüttete, während sein Freund Angelo Vanelli mit dem Traktor das Foto auf einem Anhänger durch die Gegend karrte. Aus diesem Grund wurde mein Großvater offensichtlich an die faschistische Polizei verraten. Er wurde in San Vittore in Mailand inhaftiert und kam danach in das Gefängnis in Bergamo, von wo er zusammen mit Angelo Vanelli nach Mauthausen deportiert wurde. Sie starben in Gusen II am 4. und 5. Februar 1945.
